Let's be clear about one thing: Donald Trump's first term has been catastrophic. And we still have another year of it to go.
There are a whole lot of Democrat candidates challenging him and most of them are better picks than Trump. Actually, I take that back. ALL of them are better picks than Donald Trump. But some Democrat candidates are better than others. Which ones are good? Which ones are bad? Well, that's up to you to decide. I won't go into that here, because there are a million places on the Internet that do exactly this.
What I am going to discuss is what will happen if Donald Trump does win a second term. If it does happen, check this thread again in 2024 and see how accurate I was. And let me say: a Trump second term is a very real possibility.
To be blunt, Trump's second term will be absolute carnage for the United States.
First and foremost, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is not going to be on the Supreme Court by 2024. I would love it if she were, but she won't be. That's just not going to happen. So if Trump gets re-elected, then he'll be choosing a replacement for her. And it will be someone as bad as Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. And if Republicans still control the Senate, then there's nothing we can do about it, and Trump will get a third Supreme Court seat.
Now let's go a step down and look at all the lower courts. Trump will continue to pack them full of lifetime appointments for people that have been handpicked by Mitch McConnell. These judges will do everything possible to take away our consumer rights, our civil rights, and our human rights in order to give everything to corporations and Republicans. The entire judiciary branch will be completely remade from the ground-up here, and that remade judiciary branch will last for MULTIPLE generations. And there's nothing we can do about it. (As an aside, I personally feel that lifetime appointments should not exist at ANY level for ANY position in the country. The founding fathers specifically wanted to avoid kings, and yet our Supreme Court Justices are essentially kings in that regard. We need term limits, but that's a topic for another day.)
Now let's talk about climate change. Four more years of Trump means four more years of increased carbon emissions in the United States. To be clear, we were told just one year ago that we had twelve years left to act to reduce our emissions or else the worst effects of climate change will become unavoidable. Not only did we do NOTHING in the past year, but we actually got worse. Our emissions went UP. Another four years of this does not just remove four years from that twelve-year time frame, it actually probably removes seven or eight years, because the time frame will shrink. They didn't say "twelve years of doing nothing will solve the problem", they said "twelve years will cause the problem to be irreversible". Four more years of Trump will likely make climate change irreversible forever. As a planet, Earth cannot afford that. Humanity cannot afford that.
Now let's talk about the economy. How's Trump's trade war going? Well, Trump is trying to end the trade war with China. Why? Because he knows that this trade war is going to hurt him in the 2020 election. But if he gets re-elected, then that doesn't matter anymore and he is free to start as many trade wars as he wants. Most economists are predicting such, including conservatives. Once Donald Trump no longer has to worry about re-election, he's going to start other trade wars against other countries. This will screw over all Americans, and eventually plunge us into a recession.
On top of that, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, has his term end in 2022. Donald Trump has been VERY critical of the Federal Reserve because they don't do what he tells them to do (because they don't have to). But in 2022, Trump will be able to choose his replacement. It will be somebody who will do exactly what he tells them to do. This will send us from a recession into a depression, the depths of which we have likely never seen before.
We will see more hatred, violence, anger, people locked in cages, attacks on minorities, and so forth. In the United States. It will happen. This will be complete carnage for us.
I'm not advocating for any Democrat in particular. If you need to know who I like and who I don't like, then perhaps I can talk about that later. But for now, I just want to lay out the facts: Donald Trump is a dangerous human being. He's a danger to the courts, the environment, the economy, any person who isn't white or native-born, and so much more. And this won't just be more of the same. Trump's second term will be vastly different from his first. Why? Because he won't have to worry about re-election anymore. So he is free to be unrestrained.
And yes, that's the scariest part. As bad as Trump's first term was, this is what he is like when he is restraining himself. He won't be, after 2020. We will get to see Donald Trump's unrestrained self. And given how horrific is restrained self is... god help us if we see him unrestrained.
