Salutations, fellow WyvernIRCians... WyvernIRCites? Wyverns? Whatever we are! I hope you're having a lovely day.
Anyways, I want to introduce you to a format that I invented, and has recently caught on in the #mtg room.
Here's the deal: You get to form a collection of cards from exactly one draft set of every expansion in Modern. From that one pool, you can make as many decks as you want, in whatever formats you choose. You can have a Standard deck, a Casual Constructed deck, a Commander deck, a Pauper deck, whatever you want.
You can generate packs at mtgen.net
To form a pool, you get the following packs:
3 Eighth Edition
6 Mirrodin
2 Darksteel
1 Fifth Dawn
3 Champions of Kamigawa
2 Betrayers of Kamigawa
1 Saviors of Kamigawa
3 Ninth Edition
6 Ravnica: City of Guilds
2 Guildpact
1 Dissension
3 Coldsnap
6 Time Spiral
2 Planar Chaos
1 Future Sight
3 Tenth Edition
5 Lorwyn
1 Morningtide
5 Shadowmoor
1 Eventide
6 Shards of Alara
2 Conflux
1 Alara Reborn
3 Magic 2010
5 Zendikar
1 Worldwake
3 Rise of the Eldrazi
3 Magic 2011
6 Scars of Mirrodin
2 Mirrodin Besieged
1 New Phyrexia
5 Innistrad
1 Dark Ascension
3 Magic 2012
3 Avacyn Restored
3 Magic 2013
4 Return to Ravnica
4 Gatecrash
1 Dragon's Maze
3 Magic 2014
6 Theros
2 Born of the Gods
1 Journey into Nyx
3 Magic 2015
5 Khans of Tarkir
2 Fate Reforged
2 Dragons of Tarkir
3 Magic Origins
4 Battle for Zendikar
2 Oath of the Gatewatch
4 Shadows over Innistrad
2 Eldritch Moon
Good luck with forming a pool, and trying to build a deck out of it. If you get an exceptionally bad pool, I suppose you could "take a mulligan" and go ahead and make another pool. Or you could have fun with it and see if you can persevere through the challenge.
The idea behind this is that one person won't have an advantage due to having a higher budget or a bigger pool. Everyone is equal! Also, you may surprise yourself by finding a really good card that you never knew existed, since some of these are pretty old cards, dating back to 2003. Note that any cards you get are legal, even if they aren't available in Modern, such as by being on the Modern banlist or by being a Masterpiece.
Note that for future sets, after the block comes out, you will usually have 4 packs of the large set and 2 packs of the small set (for example, 4 Kaladesh and 2 Aether Revolt). Some blocks may have a modified draft structure that modifies these numbers, but that is the default.
Update: We have decided to allow players an unlimited number of cards named Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest. You can have as many of these as you like, even if you didn't open them. Note that for other basic lands, such as Snow-Covered Lands and Wastes, you have to actually open them in packs if you wish to use them. Of course, if you want an even bigger challenge, feel free to limit yourself based on basic lands as well.
